How much does it cost to build an app in NYC?

An iPhone app with raphy.dev starts at $20,000 (Android on request), and a web app starts at $12,000.

An app budget should begin with a complete user journey: what someone opens, does and finishes. The number of screens alone misses the work behind accounts, permissions, saved data and failure states. A smaller launch can still be useful if its core journey works end to end.

  1. User actionWhat must someone complete?
  2. Accounts and dataWhat gets saved, shared or paid?
  3. Daily operationWho supports it after launch?

What changes the price?

Platform and distribution

Choose whether the first release needs the browser or an iPhone app. Describe any camera, device or offline requirements. Android on request, with its own agreed scope; it should not be assumed to come with an iPhone quote.

Roles, data and integrations

Customer and administrator accounts need rules about who can see and change each record. Payments, external APIs and data migrations add paths to design and verify. List the tools you depend on and what should happen when one is unavailable.

The difficult states

A successful checkout is only one state. Missing input, interrupted connections, duplicate requests and access errors need defined behavior too. Include the situations that could leave a user confused or an operator unable to finish the job.

Release and handoff

An app needs testing, deployment access, release material and a practical way to support users. App Store submission support is part of the published iPhone scope. Review timing and launch work should be discussed separately from a feature demonstration.

Builder, freelancer or agency?

What might that scope look like?

Hypothetical examples at my published prices.

Example 01from $12,000

A browser-based workflow

A hypothetical small business needs customers to submit information and an operator to review the saved records.

Keep in scope
One core workflow, agreed account roles, stored data and a defined handoff.
Watch the boundary
Additional roles, complex reporting, migrations or outside APIs need separate scoping.
Example 02from $20,000

An iPhone-first product

A hypothetical product puts one repeatable task on an iPhone, with an account and connected backend where needed.

Keep in scope
The agreed iPhone interface and core workflow, backend integration and submission support.
Watch the boundary
Offline sync, additional platforms, subscriptions or complex device features can raise the budget.

What happens after launch?

Hosting and third-party services

List the database, storage, email, APIs and any paid platform accounts in the operating budget. Usage can change as the product changes. The written quote should say who owns those accounts and pays the providers.

Maintenance and releases

A product needs a plan for fixes and compatibility updates. Discuss maintenance as its own scope. A website care package should not be treated as full app support without an explicit agreement.

The next version

Keep a separate list of ideas for later. Moving optional features out of the first release makes the launch scope clearer, but the core journey, its checks and its handoff still need to be complete.

How to read market prices.

Thumbtack's NYC app-developer page gives a broad app-development range from $20,000 to more than $100,000. This is not a like-for-like custom iPhone project quote.

Thumbtack: app developers in New York · Checked

Thumbtack's NYC app-developer page is a useful starting point for market context. Broad directory estimates need a scope check: a prototype, a browser tool and a released iPhone product are different deliverables.

Use the same platform, account roles, integrations and release requirements when comparing quotes. Ask what testing, backend work and handoff are included. A lower headline price does not explain which parts of that brief are covered.

Common questions.

What is the starting price for an iPhone app?

My iPhone app work starts at $20,000, with Android on request. The published scope includes the core interface and workflow, backend integration where needed, App Store submission support and source code handoff.

Would a web app cost less for my idea?

A web app starts at $12,000. It may be a useful first platform if the workflow can run in a browser. Device requirements, offline needs and how people will use the product should drive the choice.

Does a smaller MVP mean an unfinished app?

No. A useful MVP completes a narrow user journey. Optional features can wait, while access rules, data handling, error states and the agreed launch checks remain part of that first journey.

Is Android included in the iPhone starting price?

Android on request. Tell me if both platforms are necessary so I can assess the shared work, platform-specific behavior and release requirements in the quote.

Do I own the code and accounts?

Yes. The source code handoff is part of the published app scope. The project agreement should also identify the repository, domain, platform accounts and access needed to operate it.

Can you promise the App Store launch date?

I confirm a project timeline with the quote, but submission support is not a promise of an external review date. The release plan needs room for review feedback and any required changes.

Tell me what needs to work.

A useful first message can be short. Include what you know:

  • Who uses the app and the task they need to finish
  • Browser, iPhone or another requested platform
